Chapter Nine
My surroundings are obscured by a thick haze of smoke. Its tendrils reach down my throat, making me cough, and crawl into my watery eyes. I retch the smoke up, out of my lungs in a grating series of coughs as I turn my head this way and that. Sound bursts to life in static waves, alive one moment, dead on my ears the next. Voices sharp with panic meet my ears in a jumble. Waves of pain crash over me as my vision blurs. Everything is shades of orange and red, flames and blood pooled together.
As though from a distance, several people shout my name, but everything swims together. My eyes stream as I lay back down on the dirt floor. Iâm dimly aware that something is sticking out of my left shoulder, though I donât imagine what it could be. What a silly thought.
Cries and shouts echo through the woods as my eyes fall closed. This must be a very strange dream. Iâm back in my apartment, no doubt, after my extremely long double-shift, and am having some bizarre paranormal-romance fuelled dream, the book likely still in my hands.
A sharp bolt of pain lances through me. My eyes fly wide. Dreams are not painful. I blink slowly as a naked Mordecai kneels at my feet, a long, sharp branch in his hand, bloody at one end. I blink, my gaze taking all of him in for the first time. My mouth falls open. âWhat are you doing with that?â
The wolf, though in human form, crouches, muscles taut. His silver eyes are piercing in the gloom, pinched with something like pain, or anger. Mordecai rips a strip of my shirt off and binds it around my leg. I wince. âTaking it out of your leg.â His hands are deft and surprisingly gentle as he binds my wound. Like when heâd bound my foot.
Mordecai looks up, over his shoulder.
Detective Jaken and Jana stand behind him. Jaken is holding Jana back from me.
âWe canât move her like this,â Mordecai says. I fight back the darkness pulling at the edges of my vision, trying to hold onto something, the silver of his eyes, the warmth of his hand resting on my leg. âIâve already sent Vale back to get Divina. This would be too much for our High Priestess, Deirdre.â
Iâm definitely not in my apartment. Not a dream. My mind blurs. Nothing makes sense. What happened? I try to look down at myself. Thereâs so much pain and noise jarring my thoughts. My head is clouded. âWhatââ
Jana finally shoves past Jaken and skirts Mordecai. She comes to sit beside me and takes my hand. âHey, youâre going to be okay.â Her familiar pink hair cascades down her shoulders, framing her pale face, crinkled in deep concern.
I shake my head, trying to piece things together, but itâs all a jumble. âWhat happened? What are you doing here?â
Jana glances at the men, brows raised. âYou donât remember?â
Mordecai crawls over. Mordecai is naked! My eyes drink him in.
